What is the Low Voltage Directive (LVD)?
The Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) is one of the key European Union regulations governing the safety of electrical equipment designed to operate within specific voltage limits. Its primary objective is to ensure that electrical products are safe for users, domestic animals, and property while facilitating their free movement within the European Economic Area (EEA).
Scope
The Low Voltage Directive applies to electrical equipment operating within the following voltage ranges:
- 50 V – 1000 V AC (Alternating Current)
- 75 V – 1500 V DC (Direct Current)
A wide range of electrical and electronic products within these voltage limits must comply with the LVD requirements in order to bear the CE marking.
Essential Safety Requirements
Under the Directive, products are expected to provide protection against the following hazards:
- Risk of electric shock
- Excessive temperature and burn hazards
- Fire hazards
- Mechanical hazards
- Hazards caused by electric arcs and sparks
- Risks associated with inadequate insulation and leakage current
- Safety risks arising from external environmental influences
Conformity Assessment
To demonstrate compliance with the LVD requirements, manufacturers are required to:
- Perform a risk assessment.
- Conduct testing and evaluations according to the applicable harmonized standards.
- Prepare technical documentation.
- Issue an EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC).
- Affix the CE marking to the product.
